Globlow

Inspired by the way light was stylised in comics, the Finnish architects Vesa Hinkola, Markus Nevalainen, Rane Vaskivuori of the collective Valvomo began to design and build a lamp that would make design history. They borrowed a fan from one of their computers, mounted it on a steel rod and sewed a lampshade with a textile used for parachutes. The textile was lightweight, strong enough to contain the air from the fan, and gave the appropriate opacity to diffuse the light source. The lamp was named Globlow and first exhibited in 1996 at the Museum of Applied Arts in Helsinki. First produced by the company Netsurfer Ltd and part of the groundbreaking exhibition Snowcrash in Milan, 1997. Globlow has been featured in numerous international magazines, exhibitions and can be found in museum collections such as MoMA in New York.
